Reading in a Second Language: Librarian Advice for Literacy

Reading in a second language is HARD! As someone who works and recommends books in a language other than English, I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

Quick advice:
1. Know your language level. This makes Easy Readers (which often come with a CD for added audio comprehension with your reading!) a great reading category. Plus, you can test your comprehension up or down a level to make sure you're getting the most from your book!
2. Look for stories that you already enjoy in your native language - this might seem simple, but wanting to know what happens next and getting lost in the story trick you into easier understanding!
3. Don't assume that you have to start with picture books! Try books like graphic novels or audio-resources like podcasts.

Let me know if you're looking for resources like those I've mentioned in this video and I'll make a follow-up! While I already have these things on-hand in French, I'd be happy to try my hand at collecting resources in a different language?

Hope this is helpful!
