My struggle with acne has been pretty well documented through the years that I’ve had this blog. Once I think I’ve gotten it under control, it will re-colonize my pores in the most painful way, and I’ll have to start from square one! I’ve tried over-the-counter (OTC) and some prescription pills and ointments over the years, but have been desperately searching for that OTC miracle on my student budget (and for the convenience!). Enter Differin® Gel, a new addition to my gentlest acne-clearing skincare routine, which I picked up at Target!

The new Differin® Gel is the first (and only!) prescription strength retinoid ready for use OTC! Its job? To help clear and prevent the pesky force known as acne. Basically, it fights the good fight in my pores and across the surface of my skin with the power of RX as the newest advancement in the over the counter acne category (in over 30 years! I’m so ridiculously glad it’s here to shake things up!). The active ingredient is a dermatologist recommended retinoid, Adapalene, which was only available with a prescription before now.

In order to restore my skin to its ideal texture, tone, and acne-free-ness, Differin® Gel goes deep into my pores to clear breakouts at their beginning as part of my breakout routine! This prevents them before they’re even an evil idea lurking in the shadows, leaving nothing but good vibes and metaphorical sunshine.

I’ve put together a little video tutorial to show how I’m incorporating Differin® Gel into my gentlest skincare regimen! You can watch it immediately below this text, or skip it and read the explanation.

1. I remove my makeup at the end of the day using these cloths that only require water. If you’re interested in this magic, I’ve done a whole series on YouTube of testing dupes!
2. I make sure there’s no trace of the day on my skin with micellar water or a gentle cleanser. Please use caution when using Differin® Gel with more than one acne treatment or glycolic acid product because this could lead to irritation.
3. And then ~drumroll~ the star of the show! Differin® Gel isn’t a spot treatment. Instead, it’s best used when spread in a thin layer all over the face once a day! Even after acne starts to clear, this step is essential to keep it gone!
4. I moisturize with something equally gentle- luckily, I’ve still got some amazingly gentle Cetaphil® Daily Facial Moisturizer with an SPF of 15 from when it was recommended to help heal my tattoo, so I am good to go!

So, this video and post is going to serve as my #BeforeDifferinJourney as I combat my acne! I will be using Differin® Gel as my sole acne-fighting product for the next few weeks, so stay tuned to see how it (hopefully) transforms my skin!
